Prof. Talma Hendler

Prof. Hendler (MD, PhD, Full professor in Neuroscience Psychiatry), earned her a Bsc in Biology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, PhD in psychobiology from the State University of New York Stony Brook, USA in psychobiology and MD from Tel Aviv University. 

Shortly after completing her psychiatry residency in the Sheba Medical Center, she joined the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and founded the leading human neuroimaging research facility in Israel (currently termed; the Sagol Brain Institute). Under her directorship, the center has established the first clinical service of human brain mapping for neurosurgery in Israel and pioneered cutting edge research in multi-modal human neuroimaging. 

Dr Hendler joined Tel Aviv University as a senior faculty member of the school of Psychology and faculty of medicine in 2005 and is a senior member of the Sagol School of Neuroscience. 

Prof. Hendler’s research aims to bridge between accumulating knowledge about the functionality of the human brain in neuroscience, and the urging need for objective and valid indicators of mental health and illness in psychiatry and neurology. Her neuroscientific investigation focuses on understanding ‘what is emotion’? Particularly in the context of human interactions with each other and when facing distressing life events. Some of her research interests include: the cause and consequence of traumatic stress, longitudinal biomarkers of trauma induced psychopathology, anger in inter-personal context, neurobehavioral indications for ‘wanting’ and ‘liking’ in goal directed behavior, dynamic aspects of emotional experience induced by film clips and music excerpts and neural mechanism of emotion regulation. Her academic efforts have resulted in about 200 publications in peer review and leading professional journals.
